Telling Personal Stories Workshop with Bill Harley

We all have interesting things happen to us — experiences that would make good stories. But telling a personal story in performance requires more work than just telling what happened. Some thought about theme, plot, setting and character are important to make a personal story mean something to others. In this workshop, Bill will offer some prompts to help you find material for your own stories, and give some insights about how to structure them so they work as performance pieces. He’ll give examples form his work and give you a chance to work on a story of your own.

Not included in Festival Pass.

All Tickets $20

9:00 – 10:30am
Ojai Art Center
Tongue and Pen Workshop
with Kim Weitkamp

No matter your course in life, writer, spoken word artist, storyteller, or speaker, Kim will inspire you as well as give you insight into the power and affect of storytelling as a viable craft. Whether you share storytelling by tongue or by pen, learning to tell the story with intention will help keep you focused and grounded as you create and work through the layers of your piece. The workshop will also cover Story Boxing, a simple but effective way to dissect your material, get various views of it and find the core theme… helping you keep your “balance” as you write and/or perform. Oral storytellers and speakers are not the only ones who present to a listening audience. Writers, if they want to build a reader base, must interact with and present to groups. We will cover applicable ways to make you and your work more appealing to the reader/listener.

Not included in Festival Pass.
